COLUMBUS—The Real Estate and Professional Licensing Division of the Ohio Department of Commerce is thrilled to announce that Ohioans can now apply to become a new online real estate salesperson.
The new service becomes available as the Division processed more than 7,000 new license applications in 2021, a 37% increase over 2019.
“Switching from paper to online application will reduce processing time, as well as save time and money for agents. There will be no more driving to deposit checks and no more overnight courier fees,” said Superintendent Daphne Hawk. “Our division continues to leverage technology to make the customer service process more convenient for our licensees.”
Ohio law requires a prospective real estate seller to be:
- Sponsored by an Ohio Licensed Real Estate Broker
- Be a U.S. citizen or a legally admitted alien in the United States
- Be honest and truthful
- Not have been convicted of a disqualifying offence. Have not violated any civil rights laws regarding real estate in the past two years as determined by a court or violated Division rules
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Complete license education requirements, apply with applicable fees, and pass the exam
“Our work touches nearly every real estate transaction in Ohio. Working with licensed professionals, from realtors to appraisers and home inspectors, ensures confidence in buying your greatest asset, your home,” said Hawk.
There were 51,064 licensed real estate professionals for fiscal year 2022. Home sellers and buyers are encouraged to use the License search to validate that they are working with a licensed real estate agent.
Additionally, agents can now switch between brokers online. The Division processed 8,590 transfers in 2021, up 8% compared to 2019.
Soon, brokers will also be able to transfer their licenses via the online system. “We expect that to happen within the next 30 days,” Hawk said.
